Park County is located in the geographic center of Colorado and is rich with history, beautiful scenery and plenty of outdoor recreation.
Park County is comprised of 2211 square miles, which include the headwaters of the South Platte River. It is also home to several important mines, including “Orphan Boy” which was discovered in 1861 near Alma and produced gold, silver, lead and zinc. There is also the “Sweet Home Mine” which was once a silver mine and is now known for its rhodochrosite minerals.
In 1997, the Governor of Colorado designated Park County as an official State Heritage Area and called it “one of the finest resource areas of Colorado and the West.” If you want to learn more, there are driving tours with interpretive pull-outs, roadside exhibits and sign posts highlighting up to 70 sites that are significant in terms of the history of the area and the special natural resources that abound.
If you enjoy the outdoors, you will find plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
